Brunk, Annetta Beatrice Hartman
Annetta Beatrice Hartman Brunk, 91, of Newton, Kan., died Jan. 12, 2020. She was born June 13, 1928, to Lee and Genora Silveus Hartman in Fisherville, Pa.
After the death of her mother, in 1937 Maurice and Velma Landis of Lancaster, Pa., became her foster parents due to her father being unable to care for all of his six children alone on the farm.
She married Frank Brunk on June 19, 1948, in Wissembourg, France, during the last year of his two-year term with Mennonite Central Committee as part of a postwar reconstruction unit.
She was a homemaker during the 1950s while they lived in Phoenix, Ariz. She used her love of music to teach her young children to sing in parts. She directed the Sunday children’s chorus at Sunnyslope Mennonite Church and sang in the Phoenix College Choir.
She and Frank moved their family to Colorado in the early 1960s when he became director of Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp, where her cooking became legendary. During those 20 years, she flipped thousands of pancakes, baked hundreds of pies, packed numerous sack lunches for hike days and was applauded for her wonderful home-cooked style meals. She met those long hours in the kitchen with energy and a smile.
She chose to see the best in life, and that positive outlook helped carry her through the last months of living with Parkinson’s disease.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Bill Swartley of Newton; son-in-law Tom Gingerich of Oregon; a sister, Kathryn Bostic of Pennsylvania; a brother, Ted Hartman of Virginia; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 2012; a son, Rene Brunk, in 1997; and a daughter, Jeannette Gingerich, in 2008.
Interment for her and Frank will take place Aug. 2 at Zion Mennonite Church Cemetery in Hubbard, Ore. A memorial fund for her has been established at Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston.
